As the saying goes, If I had a nickel...

Friends, I have lost track of the number of times that someone, very well-intentioned, upon hearing that I am writer and filmmaker, would say sheepishly to me, "I have this book (or "idea," "screenplay," "amazing experience") inside of me that I want to tell."

"Super," is my ever-constant response followed by my also ever-hopeful question, (knowing the committment and roll-up-your-sleeves, hard work involved in bringing an idea out of imagination, mind or soul on to the page), "How is the writing going?"

I hate to report that 99% of the time, I get a guilty "I have not started  yet."  Expecting that response, I offer more encouragement and advise, if wanted, seeking to get him or her into the saddle, even suggesting that they book a consultation with me so that they might get started on incarnating what is inside of them into reality,  as their distinctly unique gift to the world.

Friends, the clock is ticking.  Answer the inspiration inside of you with action.     I promise you that you will not regret moving forward now.  The reward will be deep satisfaction and the gift of something enduring for generations to come.

WRITER DEVELOPMENT

It is said that the average book sells only 250 copies. Is writing, therefore, a crapshoot? Waste of time? Where is the road to success?

FOR THOSE WHO create SCreenplays

With over 250,000 screenplays already floating out there, you need a lot more than a non-vested outsider doing coverage on your screenplay, the one that took you over a year to write.

FILM DEVELOPMENT & PRODUCTION

From concept to screen, film development and production is what we love to do.

The Road We Travel
(Some thoughts from a fellow artisan)

It can seem sometimes that we have chosen a tough road to travel.

I love what writing guru, Robert McKee, said recently in an interview, “If you look into the careers of the best writers in Hollywood, there were always ten years of failure. It’s common. It is a reality that most people don’t want to face.”

So what made the difference here? Perhaps, simply, they simply never gave up. Said another way, they had vision, tenacity and dogged-determination, the kind that sees problems, rejection and failure as just another river to cross.

The reality is that the playing field is neither level nor fair. Beside talent and the ability to self-market, what we all need in order to sail these seas is a healthy identity, perspective, balance, a sense of humor, perseverance and, of course, top-level skills in our craft. Add to that good friends and family who don’t think you are nuts when you are foregoing the stability of a “normal career” for the creative journey.

Finding other like-minded people can be pivotal. Those who get it. Understand. And have the expertise to get you around the next turn.

Yes. Seasoned professionals like us.

Our clients receive intensive grounding in the basics such as structure, plot, theme, character, audience, voice, dialogue and proper formatting. With objective feedback, we get to the roots of their concepts, writing and marketing ideas – and offer improvements or a complete remodel.

Our one-to-one coaching strengthens imagination, the skill of intentional listening and confidence with the unfamiliar and, because we are in the business of storytelling, we
train our clients to become adept at marketing themselves in a highly competitive, rapidly changing industry. Examples include… Pitching. Knowing what your skills are worth. Owning the room. Contracts. Networking. Recognizing good material. The necessity of chutzpah. Handling feedback and rejection. Building your team. Clarity, clarity and more clarity. Seeing problems as opportunities.

Do we work hard? Sure. Apps don’t cut it when it comes to producing great material.

As author Malcolm Gladwell notes in Outliers, success "…is not exceptional or mysterious. It is grounded in a web of advantages and inheritances, some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky.”
